Emotional Intelligence: Your Hidden Superpower to Success

Infographic illustrating a comprehensive guide to Emotional Intelligence (EQ), covering its definition, core features like self-awareness and empathy, strategies for improvement such as journaling and active listening, daily habits, and benefits for relationships, career, and decision-making.

What is Emotional Intelligence? A Simple Guide to Understanding and Improving EQ

Did you ever say anything in anger and then later regret it? Did you ever feel misunderstood even after explaining the true situation in the best way you can to others? Moments like these happen a lot of the time. It doesn’t happen because we lack intelligence; it happens because we struggle to understand and manage emotions of both our own and others.

This ability is called Emotional Intelligence, and it quietly shapes almost every part of our life. In fact, research shows that people with high emotional intelligence often handle stress better, build stronger connections, and navigate challenges more efficiently than those who have high IQ levels or rely only on logic.

Emotional intelligence is not something you are born with or without. It is a skill which can be learnt, practiced, and strengthened over time. And once you start developing these skills, you begin to notice many powerful changes like calmer reactions, deeper understanding, and healthier relationships.

Psychologist John Mayer, who studied emotions and thought, and Peter Salovey, who studied emotions and behavior, formulated the concept of Emotional Intelligence as the ability to recognize, understand, and express one’s emotion as well as the ability to recognize, understand, and respond to others’ emotion.

Emotional Intelligence Explained – Why It Matters More Than IQ

People with high IQ levels also help themselves by improving their personal communication and relationship with others, develop empathy, increase their self-confidence by seeing things more positively, and reducing their levels of anxiety. In short, getting involved in understanding and managing emotions for positivity, focusing on self-awareness, empathy, and intentional responses than impulsive reactions is Emotional Intelligence.

A person who is emotionally intelligent will be skilled in four areas:

  • Set Clear Goals: Use visualization to maintain momentum and focus on long-term goals rather than immediate gratification.
  • Use the 1-2-3 Method: Before reacting, ask yourself, “What am I feeling?”, “What do I want for myself/others?”.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Set achievable emotional goals, such as staying calm in different situations, cultivating passion for your personal growth, and finally track your progress.

Building EQ is an ongoing proactive process requiring self-reflection and social engagement. Through this proactive process, we can master these skills. Mastering will lead to better decision-making, improved resilience, and maintain stronger and empathetic relationships in both work and life.

Emotional Intellegence

Daily Habits in Mastering Your EQ Growth

  • Use Simple Courtesies: Small gestures like “Thank you”, “Sorry” etc. can strengthen your relationships.
  • Take Responsibility: Take the responsibility of acknowledging your mistakes and even their impact on others.
  • Practice Gratitude: Always reflect on positive aspects of your life to improve your overall outlook.
  • Take Timeouts: Whenever you are overwhelmed, step away from that situation to regain composure before responding.

How Emotions Shape Decision and Behaviour

EI shapes decisions and behavior by allowing individuals to recognize, understand, and manage emotions in themselves and others, preventing impulsive and emotion-driven choices. High EI individuals use emotions as data, blending feelings with rational thoughts to improve judgment, foster better and more objective decision-making in high-stake solutions.

  • Decision as Data: Emotions provide valuable, immediate data regarding situations, such as fear signaling risk or excitement indicating opportunities.
  • Avoiding Rash Choices: Managing emotional responses like anger or anxiety prevents knee-jerk, impulsive reactions, irrational, or poor-quality decisions.
  • Influence of Specific Emotions and Their Behavioural Impact: Fear often increases risk aversion, while anger may fuel risk-taking and in some cases it encourages perceived injustice. EI allows us to navigate social situations better, leading to more cooperation, inclusive of any ethical behavior and maintaining it on long-term goals.

Conclusion

In a world where quick reactions and constant pressure has become normal, EQ always stands out as a true friendly life skill. EQ is not about suppressing your emotions or staying calm; in fact, it is about what you feel, why you feel, and how to respond in a very thoughtful way. The most powerful thing in EQ is – it is a skill we can build every day. When we build EQ, we improve more than just mood. Whether at home, work, or in social situations, EQ helps to connect with people on a deeper level. Few day-to-day EQ skills which we can start from now and continue these simple steps can create extraordinary changes.

  • Start small
  • Observe your emotions
  • Pause before reacting
  • Listen more deeply.

Which is the most prominent thing we all saw during this pandemic..??? On one side, where people are helping and serving others, on the other side, people cheated people with more fraudster opportunities and scams to get the money out. Previously, the most popular scams were the selling of beautiful monuments, the printing of various countries’ currencies, Baker’s scam, stamp scam, share market scam, etc. But, nowadays people have turned and accepted modernization and today’s scams are all based on technology.

TECH SCAMS: Basically, a tech scam or a technical support scam is a type of fraud, where the scammers claim to offer the victims a variety of legitimate technical services. The scammers, with the use of social engineering and a variety of other tricks, build confidence among their victims that their laptop/ computer device or any mobile device is having a problem like any malware function or any virus.
The consumers also without knowing the fact trust the scammers and don’t realize their tricks of fraudulent services. The scammer will then indoctrinate the victim to pay the amount to fix the problem. The victim pays the amount to the scammer and once the payment is made, then, how the payment was transferred to the scammer or where the victim has paid the amount, cannot be detected in many cases. Finally, the victim loses all his money which is paid to the scammer, and once the money is gone it cannot be traced.

CYBERCRIME: Cybercrime also called computer crime, is a crime that involves a computer with a network. The computer is used as an instrument to commit illegal frauds and activities such as trafficking, stealing properties, tricking and targeting the victim’s money, property, and finance, violating the policies, and many other financial thefts, espionage too. Warren Buffett once described cybercrime as, the “number one problem to mankind
and real risk to humanity”. Computers involved in cybercrime are like a commission of the crime or the target itself. It harms someone’s security or financial health. As per the reports, the annual damage caused to the global economy in 2014 was $445 billion and it can go up to $10.5 trillion by 2025.

THE MOST POPULAR CYBERCRIMES ARE :

*PHISHING: Phishing is the practice of tricking Internet users to reveal their personal or confidential information, which can then after be used illicitly. in today’s world, everyone would have received messages like,

– tap on this link and you can win a million dollars…!!!
– e-mails and messages pretending to be a famous organization
These are the various ways through which cybercrimes commit phishing and the users turn into victims. The users, unknowingly, provide their confidential information including credit card details and addresses too…
* CYBER EXTORTION: Cyber extortion is a crime where someone is holding your confidential data until you pay the ransom. In this, the cybercriminals gain access to your computers and steal some of the confidential data, and then, they ask you to pay the ransom to release it.

INTEGRITY: What is integrity..?? Having a strong quality of moral principles. What are moral principles..?? The guidelines that people live by to make sure they are doing the right thing like Honesty… What is Honesty..?? Honesty states a refusal to steal, lie or deceive in any way. But doing a scam implies a yes to steal, lie or deceive in any way.
The scammers lose their integrity while doing a scam. Doing a scam can be a shortcut way to earning more money in a short period, but without integrity, moral principles, and honesty, how long will your earnings survive..?? Many people have lost their hard-earned money in scams.
Firstly, the scammers, who already lost their integrity, make the users believe in them by stealing their money. After the scam, they will break that trust. Because of these many scams, people have actually forgotten to trust or believe anyone. As per the present scenario, the relations are already in a bad condition. And now, if the scams are going to continue in the same way, then how will people believe in another person? Then, slowly, there will be no trust, no faith, no belief. If all these things don’t occur, then imagine, “how is life going to be..??”

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If these scams will continue in the same way, then probably,  The next generation will not see honesty, integrity, moral principles, and faith.

PARENTING TIPS FOR KIDS

Today’s kids are not naughty. Today’s kids are mischievous… Today’s kids don’t listen to their parents… Today’s generation is very different and many more comments we say about kids. But what is the fact…?? Is there any way through which we can control the kids..??
Is there any magic stick through which we can teach them the good things or is it our parent’s mistake that we are not upbringing the kids in a proper way or anything else…???
What is wrong…??? Where are we wrong…??? How kids are learning wrong and from where
they are learning the wrongs…???
As stated in one of the recent research, there’s no unique or adequate way to raise kids… No proper principles, no rules… nothing…!! It is said that every child has its own uniqueness, its own behavior. So, there can’t be a particular term or a condition through which we can raise our kids. But, there are some basic principles which every kid has to learn at the beginning of their life.

RESPECT :

TO PARENTS: Every child should learn first to respect their parents. Nowadays, we can see there are many problems going on between the kids and their parents. Your mother is the one, who gave birth to you and your father is the one, who gave everything of his life to raise you and for all this, they don’t expect anything in return. The only thing which they expect is a bit of respect from their kids. There’s a proverb which says even if you make a shoe from your skin and give it to your parents, then also you won’t be able to pay for the favor which they did you.

“RESPECT PARENTS AND GET ALL HAPPINESS IN RETURN IN THE FORM OF BLESSINGS…!!!”

TO FAMILY: All the kids in the family should be taught to respect everyone, whether they are your grandparents or your uncle’s and aunties. In a family, all the members are blood-related. If a person is doing wrong, then you can oppose them, but don’t insult them. A child should be taught that he/she has to respect not only the elders but even the younger ones because everyone living together only becomes a family.

TO THE LOWER CLASS PEOPLE: A child should also be taught how to respect the lower class people like – the poor on the streets, the domestic help in our home. Respect doesn’t denote to be given to a high class or rich people, in fact, it is a form of manners that is given ignoring class, caste, or religion.

TO MONEY: Every child should know the value of money and how much hard effort are being put in by your parents to earn that money. Do many parents always think that why should we say our struggles to our kids..??After all, we are earning for them only. I am not saying the parents should dominate the kids when they give money to them. But my point is, there is not at all any problem if your kids realize how hard it is to earn money. After all, it’s all our struggles that can become an inspiration for our kids when they start their life.

TO TIME: A child should be taught how to respect time by teaching him the basic manners such as waking up by 7’clock, having breakfast by 9’clock, lunch by 2 ‘clock and at the same time balancing full day with – playtime, study time, sleep, a nap, and other activities. From the beginning, if we teach our kids how to balance time then when they grow up, they may not waste time on unnecessary things.

TO NECESSITIES: Another important thing which we should teach our kids is how to value or respect your necessary things which are useful in life like school bags, books, games, piggy banks and all the necessary things which are used in everyday life. If we teach how to respect these fundamentals to our kids from an early age then we are trying to help our child for a better life. We see that few of the parents, even though they have all the luxuries in life and live a luxurious life, give only an average amount of pocket money to their kids to learn the value of money.
Apart from this, there are few other parents who send their kids out of their house and tell them to start a new life which includes their own new business, their contacts without using their parents’ name or fame to earn money. We, as parents, need to be a little strict to teach our kids how to respect family, money, time, and parents.
Love, affection, care – is required to raise a child, and also a little bit of rigidness is required, for the betterment of the kid’s life.
